Houston Burn Injury Attorney
As the second leading cause of accidental death in the U.S., trailing only motor vehicle accidents, burn injuries are common and can occur in a wide range of settings and circumstances. According to the American Burn Association, 486,000 Americans received treatment for burn injuries in 2016, including 40,000 who required hospitalization for their burns. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a fire-related death occurs roughly every 169 minutes.
Fires are only one cause of burn injuries. Chemicals, explosions or radiation also cause severe burns. Sometimes, burn injuries occur as a result of someone else’s negligence in creating conditions or failing to prevent situations that could lead to a fire or exposure to caustic materials. When that happens, when pain and disfigurement or the loss of a loved one occurs, compensation may be obtained from those who caused those losses.
The burn injury lawyers at The Brothers Law Firm represent individuals and families trying to piece their lives back together after the trauma of a burn injury. With compassion for your condition and a relentless determination to help you in any way we can, our firm will stand by your side throughout this challenging time.
What Are Burns?
Burns are injuries to the skin or tissues caused by flesh, tissue, caused by fire, electricity, chemicals, radiation or excessive friction. There are four different types of burns and each one is also classified by its degree of severity:
- Thermal burns. These include burns caused by direct contact with hot substances or surfaces such as open flames, scalding liquids or a hot stovetop.
- Chemical burns. Toxic chemicals and those with corrosive properties can cause internal burns to the respiratory system when inhaled in addition to external burns to the skin.
- Electrical burns. Electrical discharges can cause severe burns as well as nerve damage and cardiac problems.
- Radiation burns. Sunburn is the most common example of a radiation burn.
